Movable Postcards
Attention deltiologists!! [postcard collectors] There is a whole subset of postcards, especially novelty postcards. These amazing pieces of ephemera were made to move and sometimes pop-up AND go through the mail!!! The Popuplady has been collecting movable ephemera since she started collecting over 20 years ago. Recently, it became apparent that some of the most novel mechanisms were used in postcards and went through the mail! It boggles her mind! Below are just a few from her extensive collection. Enjoy the videos below!!
Why not send this fan/postcard to a friend in a hot climate?
What better way to show the break-up of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918 than using a movable mechanism? On the postcard below, turning the notched wheel at the side makes the Empire dissolve into its ‘new’ components, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Rumania, and Yugoslavia.
This is one of the truly unusal mechanisms we call “the Roller.” Pull the tab and a bar moves across the card changing the image. The mechanism is unseen and works like MAGIC!
As far as I know, these pop-up CD/DVD or message boxes were only available in Canada. Pull out the drawer and insert the message or disc. There were other designs, mostly Disney-related.
Thanks to a pop-up fan who alerted The Popuplady that they were around.
