The Movable Book Society

The Movable Book Society [MBS], organized in 1993 by Ann Montanaro, is a world-wide organization of pop-up and movable book enthusiasts. The Society, with over 400 members world-wide, brings together paper engineers, librarians, scholars, collectors, and students of paper crafts. Movable books have a 700 year history. There is much to learn.

The Society holds biennial conferences in different areas of the USA where it presents The Meggendorfer Prize to the best paper engineered book of the previous two years. As of 2014, there is a new Meggendorfer Prize for the best Artist Book. Our first winner is Dorothy A. Yule’s Memories of Science.

The Society publishes a quarterly newsletter, Movable Stationery, to bring members the latest news about new books, old books, collecting, care and repair ideas, and much more. An extensive review is published after each Conference, written by The Popuplady. [see after the conference]

From time to time, The Movable Book Society will mount or sponsor an exhibition as it did in 2000 at The Brooklyn Public Libary. On occasion, the Society has also published a pop-up book, like Brooklyn Pops Up, the catalog for the exhibition, and Celebrat10n, to commemorate The Society’s 10th Anniversary.
