The Meggendorfer Prize

presented by The Movable Book Society for the Best Paper Engineering and a NEW prize for Best Artbook. [see below]

At each biennial conference, excepting the first in 1996, a prize has been awared to a paper engineer for an outstanding pop-up and movable book published.

Members of the Society’s board choose pop-up and movable books published in the previous two years before the Conference. The books are physically present throughout the Conference and members attending the Conference vote for their favorites. At the Saturday night banquet, The Popuplady presents the Meggendorfer Prize on behalf of the membership. This year, at the Portland, OR Conference, members from around the world will be sending in their votes for pre-selected books.

The Prize is named after Lothar Meggendorfer (1847-1925) an extraordinary paper engineer and illustrator who made movable books in the latter half of the 19th century. In addition to dissolving discs and pull-down panoramas, he used a single pull tab that activated multiple movements on the page. He perfected the use of the rivet or grommet that allowed for the multiple actions. Meggendorfer illustrated and engineered over 100 books that were translated around the world. His illustrations were filled with wit and great humor that appealed to adults and children alike. Each book usually began with a poem warning young hands to treat these delicate books carefully.
